Of course, Canada has also produced plenty of films with a sense of humour.

The legendary Bob and Doug McKenzie comedy that turned Canadian stereotypes into comedy gold.

Bon Cop Bad Cop
A hilarious bilingual buddy-cop film that became a Canadian box office smash.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding
A global hit that many people forget is actually a Canadian production. Did you know it was shot in Greektown on the Danforth in Toronto?

The theme for 2026 is “Let’s Dream Together.” The lineup was curated with help from 51 well-known Canadians, including Margaret Atwood, Rick Mercer, Sarah Polley, and Deepa Mehta.

There is plenty to choose from. More than 40 premiere and sneak preview screenings are planned, along with 150 screenings tied to this year’s Canadian Screen Award nominees, including all eight Best Picture contenders.

There will also be a national tribute to the late actor Graham Greene, with screenings taking place in his home community of Six Nations.

Being Canadian
A humorous documentary exploring Canadian identity.

The Grand Seduction
A comedy about a Newfoundland town trying to convince a doctor to stay.

BlackBerry
The hit drama about the rise and fall of the Canadian tech company.

If you enjoyed BlackBerry, Nirvanna: The Band - the Show - the Movie, a 2026 film now playing in some theatres, is hilarious.

Another one I’m excited about is Mile End Kicks, centred on a 24-year-old music critic in 2011 Montreal writing a book about Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill. The film features a killer soundtrack and even a cover of Ironic by Avril Lavigne.

Les Furies is the first female-driven sports comedy from Quebec.  And guess what? I saw it for free (their treat) last night to celebrate National Canadian Film Day. Not knowing much about the characters beforehand, one in particular felt a little too close to home.
