Funny Movie Night Gifts for National Canadian Film Day đŹ
Celebrate National Canadian Film Day with classic Canadian films, free screenings in Toronto, and a few funny movie night gifts to make the experience even better.
đ Fun Canadian-film trivia:
The event started in 2014, and it has grown into a nationwide celebration of the stories Canadians tell on screen.
Letâs start with one unforgettable Canadian classic.
The Sweet Hereafter
Often listed among the greatest Canadian films ever made, this haunting drama from director Atom Egoyan showed the world the power of Canadian storytelling. It is thoughtful, emotional, and unforgettable.
Of course, Canada has also produced plenty of films with a sense of humour.
A few favourites from the past include:
Strange Brew
The legendary Bob and Doug McKenzie comedy that turned Canadian stereotypes into comedy gold.
Bon Cop Bad Cop
A hilarious bilingual buddy-cop film that became a Canadian box office smash.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
A global hit that many people forget is actually a Canadian production. Did you know it was shot in Greektown on the Danforth in Toronto?
The theme for 2026 is âLetâs Dream Together.â The lineup was curated with help from 51 well-known Canadians, including Margaret Atwood, Rick Mercer, Sarah Polley, and Deepa Mehta.
There is plenty to choose from. More than 40 premiere and sneak preview screenings are planned, along with 150 screenings tied to this yearâs Canadian Screen Award nominees, including all eight Best Picture contenders.
There will also be a national tribute to the late actor Graham Greene, with screenings taking place in his home community of Six Nations.
đŹ Free Canadian films showing in Toronto this year include:
Being Canadian
A humorous documentary exploring Canadian identity.
The Grand Seduction
A comedy about a Newfoundland town trying to convince a doctor to stay.
BlackBerry
The hit drama about the rise and fall of the Canadian tech company.
If you enjoyed BlackBerry, Nirvanna: The Band - the Show - the Movie, a 2026 film now playing in some theatres, is hilarious.
Another one Iâm excited about is Mile End Kicks, centred on a 24-year-old music critic in 2011 Montreal writing a book about Alanis Morissetteâs Jagged Little Pill. The film features a killer soundtrack and even a cover of Ironic by Avril Lavigne.
Les Furies is the first female-driven sports comedy from Quebec. And guess what? I saw it for free (their treat) last night to celebrate National Canadian Film Day. Not knowing much about the characters beforehand, one in particular felt a little too close to home.
It was a feel good, hilarious movie:
At Danna Bananas, we believe the best movie nights also include a sense of humour. Funny mugs and novelty gifts make the experience even better.
After all, whether you're watching a Canadian drama or a comedy, the best part of movie night is taking a break from life and sharing a few laughs.
So support Canadian film, grab some popcorn, and enjoy a great movie made right here at home.

Happy National Canadian Film Day! đż
And don't forget the layered butter. Did you know Danna Bananas sells Popcorn Socks?
P.S. A few funny movie night gifts
Smartphone Projector Gift
Want to make movie night even more fun? Try projecting your film on the wall inside or out. Great for a summertime viewing party with a Smartphone Projector. Suddenly your living room feels like a tiny Canadian film festival.
The snack moment
Popcorn Socks
Did you know Popcorn Socks are literally themed for movie nights and even come in a retro popcorn box gift package.
The cozy drink moment
Movie Buff Funny Novelty Mug
Add a Movie Buff mug filled with something you love and youâre officially ready for a Canadian movie marathon.
